yeah... I use package managers for most things, but php and apache I tend to install manually... (unless it's an OS install in a virtual machine to test one thing, or if it's just a mythtv box, but for a webserver I tend to do manual installs) - I like things I use a lot to be compiled in rather than as modules, so PHP is a module to apache (just for maintainability reasons) , but all of it's extensions are statically compiled in, and they're only the ones I actually use...

afaik Suexec is still maintained (it's part of Apache, not a third party thing) but is pretty stable anyway... The problem with suPHP is that some of the packages that ship with Fedora (e.g., Squirrelmail and phpMyAdmin) get their files owned by root, which is probably pretty daft but suPHP breaks them... And I quite like using package managers :)

Hmm... Interesting... Not a problem I've ever had (I've always tended to both compile apache manually and also keep all web roots in the same place)I've used suPHP before and it works well (running as the owner is fine as long as you make sure the permissions on the directories are absolutely solid) suexec if I recall is actually not really being developed much now...
